Recently the research firm BNEF announced a research report,it gave an overview for the transformation plan of Poland’s Belchatow coal-fired power plant.BNEF believes that in an optimal scenario, if 5GW of photovoltaic systems and 5.7GW of wind facilities are installed by 2036, it could replace 80% of the electricity generated by Belchatow's coal-fired power station.

BNEF analyzed the feasibility of a gradual transition to renewable energy, energy storage systems and thermal energy storage systems for electricity from the Belchatow coal-fired power plant in Poland. Belchatow is the largest scale coal-fired power plant in Europe,it is also the sixth largest in the world.

BNEF believes that in an optimal scenario, if 500GW of PV systems, 5.7GW of wind facilities, 1GW of energy storage and 0.1GW of thermal energy storage are installed, this energy mix could generate 80% of the electricity generated by the Belchatow coal-fired power plant.

 "Our analysis finds that the cheapest electricity mix can be achieved in Poland when wind power and PV systems account for the majority of the total electricity generation," the BNEF researchers said.

Lignite production in Poland will fall by 75% from 2021 to 2030, the company said, while lignite resources could run out by 2036, which would force the closure of the Belchatow coal-fired power plant and necessitated the adoption of alternative energy sources.

The report also looks at clean energy technologies that could be deployed after 2030, including green hydrogen, floating photovoltaic systems, pumped storage facilities and small nuclear reactors (SMRS).
